Walvissen in het nieuws

Japan, het land van de gebruikte onderbroekjesautomaten, zal in 2018 wel hebben gedacht: '2018 was het jaar van De Botte Horken Die Overal Mee Wegkomen'. En daarna: 'dat moeten wij ook kunnen'.

Al decennia jagen Japanners niet op walvissen, maar doen alleen onderzoek naar walvissen. En dus bevaren zij al jarenlang de zeven oceanen met onderzoeksschepen om prangende wetenschappelijke vraagstukken te beantwoorden, zoals: 'Hoeveel walvissen kun je vangen in één dag?' en 'Hoeveel blikken Whiskas haal je uit zo'n dier?'

En omdat de wereld toch al naar de kloten gaat, zal het toch weinig meer uitmaken of er een walvisje meer of minder ronddobbert op deze aardkloot. En 'waarom zouden we dan nog in de Internationale Walvisvaartcommissie blijven?' En de gewone mannen (m/v) in de straten? Die hätten das gar nicht gewusst dat dergelijke vissen überhaupt bedreigd waren.

Op 1 januari knalt New Horizons langs Ultima Thule ("Toelie", zoals de Amerikanen zeggen). En natuurlijk is het verste ding waar ooit een door mensenhanden geschapen apparaat langsschoot niet van mysterie verstoken: het is niet rond, maar de hoeveelheid licht die het weerkaatst is toch onveranderlijk. De ware betekenis van Kerstmis is niet dat kindje Jezus geboren werd, niet dat Sint Nicolaas zijn verjaardag een paar weken naar achteren naar voren naar achteren opschoof, niet dat je weer Zalig Kerstfeest mag zeggen van Trump, maar, gewoon, dat met Kerst die hele tent gewoon sluit zodat we in alle soberheid samen kunnen zijn en tot bezinning kunnen komen.

Wat betekent een 'government shutdown' voor die arme sukkelaars die het slachtoffer dreigen te worden in oorlog (open in incognito) voor tegen om Kerst?
